What is Neuroaffirming Practice?

Neuroaffirming Practice is a philosophy that guides how one relates to others with Neurodiverse brains. It promotes value, self-worth, and positive identity. It celebrates difference and acknowledges that difference is not a deficit—different does not mean less than, broken, or abnormal.

It recognizes that Neurodivergence is a natural part of life and neurodivergent individuals are a valuable and vital part of our world.

The Neurodiversity Circle also recognizes that some neurodivergent individuals may have specific support needs during their lifetime. And we know that respectful, compassionate services can be helpful to Neurodivergent individuals when presented in a way that is affirming to their identity.

This is promoted through authentic relationships that create safety through connection, while building on unique strengths.

Neuroaffirming Practice Is Not

It is not about “treating” Neurodivergence.

It is not about compliance.

It is not about behavior modification.

It is not about training individuals to be less Neurodivergent.

It is not about meeting neurotypical standards or clinical outcomes.

It is not about “fixing” undesired behaviors.

It is not about training individuals to fit in.
